aMessage of District Chairperson for Leo Clubs

Hi there everyone! This is Lion Alan Thoo, appointed District Chairperson for LEO Clubs for the up & coming fiscal year 2009/2010! This is a big challenge for me, and I certainly hope I will be able to keep up with the fast paced LEO Clubs in our district! :)

Being the Regional Committee Chairperson for Perak for the last 2 fiscal years have certainly prep-ped me in taking on this role. I hope that I will be able to carry out my duty as well as current District Chairperson, Ln May Cheah is doing, and not forgetting also other former DCs like Ln Ong Lai Peng, Lion H'ng Chee Wei, Lion Oeh Eng Soon, Lion Andy Lim and many more.

I'm indeed honoured to be given this opportunity and appointment. I was a LEO member when I turned 15 in Form 3 back in those days! :) I remember the first project that I attended with my seniors was a visit to the Jelapang Old Folks Home in Ipoh. Back then, the condition of the home wasn't like the present state. The old folks practically lived in a rumshackle and dilapidated building, if I may say. The feeling of sadness and pitiful filled me and still sends shiver down my spine whenever I think back. However, over the years, as an Alpha Leo and eventually a proud member of a former Omega Leo Club (Leo Club of Ipoh Omega members converted the club into the Lions Club of New Century back in 2005), I put in a lot of effort in organizing projects in the home to ensure that the old folks there would eventually live in a better way. I believe I have done my fair share of contributions.

Well, we are in the midst of preparing for the fiscal year and my team and I working real hard to have a smooth transition from DC May Cheah's fiscal year over to the new one.

Cheers and let's have another great year ahead of us!

Regards
DC for Leo Clubs 2009-2010
Lion Alan Thoo

aNew Leo Age Range

The Leo brand rejuvenation project is almost complete! To best meet the changing needs of youth and young adults throughout the world, several programmatic components have been reviewed and modified to enhance the Leo Club Program. When the new brand rolls out in July, you will see a fresh new look, along with two separate and distinct tracks for Alpha and Omega Leos.

Part of this fresh look includes a modification of the Leo age ranges to most effectively address the needs of each track and its members. Starting July 1, 2009:

  • Alpha club membership will be for youth between 12-18 years of age and will focus on individual and social development.
  • Omega club membership will be for young adults between 18-30 years of age and will focus on personal and professional development.

These new age ranges better match the current membership of Leo clubs across the globe. In a recent survey conducted by the Youth Programs Department, 88% of survey respondents said their Omega club membership consisted of Leos from 19-30 years of age, while 83% said their Alpha club membership consisted of Leos from 12-18 years of age. Furthermore, the new age ranges also better reflect the current practices of other service organizations like Rotary International and Kiwanis International.

Both tracks will continue to be connected through a larger Leo community, united by its common purpose of Leadership, Experience and Opportunity.

There are many options for Leo members who no longer fit the age range.

As a Leo club, you took part in community service that not only improved your community, but also provided you with valuable leadership experience. Continue to make a difference and apply these skills…as a Lion.

To make this transition easy, Lions Clubs International is extending a special dues discount and an exciting new club opportunity to graduating Leos and other like-minded young adults.

Graduating Leos, between the age of legal majority and through age 30, now have two ways to join a Lions club!

1. Be invited to join an existing Lions club and receive a special entrance fee waiver and only pay half international dues.

2. Charter a new Lions club with other graduating Leos and your peers. The young adults graduating Leos recruit, through age 30, also receive a charter fee waiver and benefit from discounted international dues when 10 or more graduating Leos charter a Leo to Lions club of at least 20 members.

To receive the dues discount, club secretaries complete certification online using the WMMR

or may submit the paper certification form (pdf) with the club charter application or monthly membership report.

Special benefits for graduating Leos, available from the Youth Programs Department, include:

Get started on a new Leo to Lions Club by requesting the New Club Extension Kit. Or, use the club locater to look for a club near you.

Posted on 07 Oct 2008

These are the new LIONS logo. 4-color CMYK logo is no longer used. Instead, a 2-color Lions logo of blue and yellow is used

The new LIONS logo is more sharply defined. The previous Lions logo looked fuzzy especially the CMYK version.
